Read title.

Game starts ok, intro is ok, but my base and units all explode as soon as control is given to me. What the hell is wrong with this game? It worked perfectly fine in XP, but compatibility mode set to XP doesn't fix it. I also tried 98 and 95 compatibility.

I've heard about this. It's some stupid form of copy protection that doesn't work properly, but a crack should get around it. I recently also had trouble installing this game (on XP, kept complaining that I had a debugger loaded  ) and ended up having to manually copy the files over.

Once I get my Vista system back I'll have to try installing and report back. Marked so I remember.

Did you try running it as an Admin, that fixes a lot of problems in some games.

i never had problem running RA in Win2K nor WinXP

don't know in Vista, since i ditched Vista and came back to WinXP

Vista is to worse piece of crap ever for just about anything, for the time being, Vista is only good for Office, and Work, not friendly at all for any Entertainment Desires you might have had, "as advertised".... i call that false advertising.

I've tried running it as admin and it currently has the latest patch for the expansion. Maybe I'm supposed to install it as admin since Vista has sort of a virtualized registry.

I'm having this problem: Whenever I try to launch the game, the splash screen comes up and then I get a "***FATAL*** String manager failed to initialized properly." error. In my searching, most people say that running as Admin helps, but not for me. I've un/reinstalled three times, deleted the Westwood folder, installed by right-clicking and choosing Run as Admin on the CD's Setup.exe, tried every compatibility mode from Win95 to WinXP, disabled visual themes, effects, ran it in VGA and 256 colors - NOTHING WORKS!!!! :| It's patched to 1.006 and I ran that as Admin, too.

Dell XPS 1530 laptop, Vista Premium Home SP1 x86, 3GB RAM, 8600M GT video, C2D CPU, blah blah blah.

I call you an idiot because thats wrong and its got nothing to do with this anyway.

This problem is present in XP as well as vista, the OS makes no difference, there is a solution to it and its easy to find lol, sorry OP apart from that i dont remember what it is. I think its reinstall the game, im not sure. Me and some other people that used to play this encountered this problem from time to time, i have no idea what triggers it. Try reinstalling the game because im 75% sure thats how i solved it, its a pain because it forces you to watch the intro movie again :p but never mind.

This is too bad, RA2/YR is one of my favorite games of all time, and I just got Vista x64. Although I lost my YR disc, so I guess it doesn't matter...

nothing helpful but I'll give you a bump...

The description in this OP cracked me up. That is a funny assed bug...

The Game starts and I:
a) Get an error
b) Have some image corruption
c) Crash to desktop

but noo... you get:

d) My base blows up!

LOL.
