How do I play an .avi file with .sub (subtitles) file???

So I have an avi video and I also have a .sub file to go with it along with a .idx file. However, when I use windows media player and say english subtitles it doesnt work. The avi file, the sub file, and the idx file are all the same name. How do I get these files to work together to get subtitles? What software to use?
