How do I patent a product or idea?

Just do like big companies do... produce the product, put patent pending on it, then sue anyone who uses your ides 
it had better be a good idea... patents are expensive (thousands of $$), and if someone infringes you still need to come up with the dough to sue them.
I dont know how to produce it Maybe I should just forget about a patent I got a idea i'd like to throw out to some companies but i fear that they'd steal it and i'd be left with nothin thus the patent.

drawings, a videotape of a working model, sketches, text description... depends on what kind of idea yours is.
