How do i OC my i7 950 to 4.5 or 5GHz on a H70??

No not really, and RAM temps are inconsequential for day to day. If you're worried, get a spot-fan.

If your ram is rated for 1333MHZ @ CL9 @ 1.5v, then you could increase to 1.65v and probably drop down to CL7. Or overclock to 1600 CL9.

For example, I use ram rated at 2133 9-10-9-28, but I run it at 1600 7-8-7-18.

so is it better to have higher frequencies or lower CL

For anything but benchmarking it won't make a difference. Generally the higher speeds will be better for some benchmarks while a slower but lower cl will be faster in others. In games themselves, there will be almost 0 difference. Personally id go with a slower one but you may want to have a bigger epeen so whatever.

THANKS guys,

will have a look and try lowering the vcore for the cpu and try getting the ram to CL7 on 1333 or even CL6 if it can handle it.

I also have a 950 and R3 Formula. I'm running @ 4.2GHz right now with the H70 as well. Use the easy 3.7GHz OC that Asus provides then just increase your base or multiplier accordingly. Also remember your RAM speed. I couldn't get it stable over 4.2GHz.

Ok so as a person who is running a X980 Extreme Edition on a H70 but only over clocking to 4ghz and I have mine running very good temps i.e. 30C normal and 38C Max. Would it be worth it to upgrade to a H100 or not or does not one yet have one to give any data on it.

I see ok the fans pull 90cfm each not all together but i see that i7950 cant exactly oc past 4.2 on normal. at the time the h70 got the best review it was almost equivalent to the nouta.

but i think i will just wait till the LGA2011 chips come out or the 22nm ones i might just upgrade my ram and get a SSD

If you already need 1.4v just for 4.0 ghz then you're not going much higher. I ran my cpu at 4.2 for a couple weeks, and even then I was only at 1.3875v. I got tired of listening to the ole' ball & chain making snarking "it sounds like a wind tunnel in here" comments, however, so I dropped my fans back to medium and my oc back down to 4.0. I spent quite a bit of time researching the maximum stable overclocks, and I don't recall anybody on air/water being over 4.4 for 24/7 stability on a bloomfield.

On an i7 like you have, the ram settings are insignificant. All I do with ram these days is verify that it works at the posted settings and just leave it at those settings.

lower what CL or frequency

Cas Latency is measured in clock cycles.

the fewer the clock cycles, the better. Given what you appear to know about these things, I'd suggest setting the RAM to its default factory spec.

You need to understand that reviews which show certain OC'ing achievements may push the processor beyond any sane limits that can be sustained 24/7. These are "benchmark" reviews. I suggest you do a pile of reading on this over-clocking topic, and whatever you do, try to stay within 0.03V of the "safe range" VCORE spec cited by RussianSensation.

The other side of the equation is in the limitations of heat. There are thermal specs for the processor. You can probably reduce load temperatures 10C degrees with a good water-cooling rig, but the kit you cite is probably comparable -- as some have already said -- to what you'd get with a top-end air-cooler.

Forgot @5.0GHz

@4.5GHz is very hard to do
You gonna need high vcore and bla bla bla

And probably don't gonna be stable =)

Sorry for my bad english. =}

Best I did was a few cinebenchs at 4400ghz with many bsod.
Playing a game on the 930 now load at 45% temps at 50c at 200x20= 4000 at 1.31v
This pc will run 24/7 at 4200ghz.
I never believed a pc could warm up a room till I got a 930.
I hate heat so the pc is 3 feet from the ac.

Haha, my gaming room gets poor airflow already, with my i7 920 + my Q9450 w/ 2 gpus both running DC 24/7 it's like a sauna in there!

I went back to fiddle with my OC last night, linx + games was fine at 4.1 but SETI quickly caused a restart. I have fans down at medium right now, however. I think I'd rather get 4.0 with a relatively quiet rig instead of 4.2 or so with a wind tunnel in my ears.

Hello,

sorry for the late reply but here are my setting it might not work for you but if u want to give it a go then ok.
cpu clock ratio 23X
QPI link auto
Uncore clock ratio auto
BCLK 174
SPD auto
PCI E frequency 100
turboboost disabled

First you disable turbo,C1E,EIST so you will stay at one speed.
The next thing you need to do is find your highest BCLK.
Set your vcore= 1.35v vtt =1.27v cpu pll =1.88-1.90v ioh= 1.25-1.31v
PCI E frequency 103 works better
You should hit 200bclk with out a problem now drop your multiplier to 21 that will put you at 4200mhz.
With a 21x200 you memory will also be correct
Most asus dont like more then 210 blck
