How do I obtain a noise permit for a party?

A friend of mine is having a party next weekend. His band wants to play outside in his backyard for about an hour. It will be loud.

The question is : where or how can he obtain a noise or loudspeaker permit so the police won't stop the band from playing?

How long does it usually take to get a permit?

The wife and I have had a few rather loud parties over the years in our back yard. We've had DJ's, bands, professional dance troupes, the whole nine yards without ever having a single complaint.

Before the party we notify our neighbors of what we are doing and at what time the music/noise will be cut off. We also invite some of the neighbors just for insurance and notify the police department of what we are doing, giving them a start and stop time.

Like I said, we have never had a complaint or problem. It's all a matter of being a good neighbor. You don't want to just start raising hell in the back yard and expect the neighbors not to get irritated.

yeap i have done the same thing when i lived in town.

Having good neighbors is worth more then a party. JUst grabbing a permit (didnt know there was such a thing) and having a loud party is not worth it.

it seems to me that you couldnt do it anyway.

The band would be playing from 7 to 8pm on Saturday night. The neighborhood is only several blocks from the local college soccer stadium (so the neighbors are used to hearing loud noise at night). The main problem is that the neighborhood is tightly packed with many houses on the street.

Their music is mostly just clean alternative pop - no extremely distorted death metal or anything.

The neighbors directly beside my friend's house said they are fine with the noise. But since are many other houses on the street, I have a feeling someone would most likely complain and call the cops.

I'm just wondering if it is possible to actually get some kind of permit so the band can play for 1 hour outside.

I've never heard of needing a permit to have a party at a private residence. Why don't you call or wander down to your local PD and ask them? I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you. That's their job.

next weekend? well you are SOL...chances are even if you did get the permit paperwork you would have to get ALL your neighnors within a certain ft radius to sign giving their ok. After that you'd had to come up with processing fees. and chances are by the time it gets to processing we'll be well into november.
Just play the music at a resonable level (i.e. nobody a block away should be able to hear your music, if they are its too loud for YOU), and like said notify neighborrs/invite them if u can. Usually parties close to campus most people dont care so long as they dont go into the late evening anyways (after 10pm)
