How do I network 2 PC's together

I'm trying to connect 2 PC's together using a 5 port hub. On machine I have 2 nics one is connected to a DSL modem, the other is attached to a hub. On my 2nd machine I only have one nic which is attached to the hub.

When I first connected these machines I used the Client for Microsoft Networks, File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks, and the Netbeui protocols on both machines. I was able to see both machines on the netowrk.

Presently however I can't seem to get the 2 machines to connect. The nics and the hub appears to be ok and the cables are brand new. It's really wierd, I made some changes on the IP information on the 2nd machine and after that point I was'nt able to see the the 1st machine even after I removed everything and rebuilt the network settings. If any has some suggestions on this problem I'd appreciate your insite. Thanks

Is the a easy way to do this without having to by a hub? I'm getting a second machine and all I really need is file sharing and internet access sharing.

edit: i've heard about using a special type of CAT5 cable, where the order of the wires is switched around? any help/?

buy a crossover cable at onvia.

Use WIN98/WIn2k ICS.

Use DHCP (under TCP/IP properties) on the second machine
