1720 - SMART Harddrive detects imminent failure. Your hard disk is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this harddisk. Attribute Failure: #05 F1: Boot

I've been getting this for a month now, been ignoring it but not I'm getting worried. Help?

I would back up your data as soon as possible, and then run your hard drive manufacturers diagonstics on the drive. What kind of hard drive is this?

That's a good indication that your harddrive is about to kick the bucket.

Backup everything you can't afford to lose on CDs / DVDs.

See if you can get an RMA from whatever brand the Harddrive is.

you probably need a new hard drive. smart is the hd own diagnostics. you should back your stuff up now and run DFT(drive fitness test) from hitachi to check and see if your hard drive is bad, but in my experience smart is usually right on.

Well I have nothing to save, so can I just use it until it dies or will that not be safe and I should change it right away?

You can use it until it dies, but just don't be too surprised or upset. Sometimes hard drives die slowly, grinding to a halt over a few days. All too often, they just die in an instant, never to be detected by a computer again.

Download Everest and install it. Under the Storage section is a SMART Icon. Open it up. Right-click on your drive, select Copy, and paste the results back here.

you should be able to turn off that warning in the bios if it's bugging you. sometimes it means something and sometimes it doesn't mean anything at all. seen a hdd last for over a year with that error message coming up.

this is my results for everest.

That's not a good sign, that's a reasonably high number of re-allocated sectors. It could be indicative of particulate matter inside the head/platter assembly, or head/actuator damage. That's a lot of bad sectors for just minor grown media defects, that's why I think it could be something else. Has the drive ever made a faint but distinct "ping" noise? That could have indicated a "head slap" that might have damaged a head, as well as caused some media defects and/or released some particulates. Even bump or kick the drive while it was one?

Also, consider your temps. Running a drive too hot, can cause media defects as well. If that's the cause, then it's likely that the heads are fine, but you should cool the drive better if you expect it to last.

Personally, I'd replace it, or at least put my important stuff on another drive. I've never seen a "healthy" modern IDE drive exceed more than a dozen or so bad sectors.

When SMART warning pops up, it most definitely means you need to backup the HD. I didn't do that last time and lost all my pr0n on that HD.

There might be an option to turn of S.M.A.R.T. monitoring in BIOS.
