I heard that compass needles don't actually point toward the north pole per say, but rather at another place referred to as "true north." I forget exactly where it would be located, but has anyone else heard of this?

Google is your friend...

If you happen to have a magnet, it is easy to make a compass. Rub a fine needle on the magnet; then on the side of your nose. Then lay it gently on the surface of a cup full of water. The needle well float and point north. The cup must not be of metal.

they point at the magnetic pole, which is actually on an island in canada, and not the geographic pole (true north). the magnetic pole is a few hundred miles to the south, so you have to add/subtract a few degrees depending on your rough location

I knew it had to do something with Canada but I was afraid to say it and be horribly wrong. Thanks for the info

thats not going to work due to daylight savings time and your relative location within the time zone. high noon here in texas is actually about 1:30 in the afternoon.

Actually, depending on your location it can be more than a "few" degrees. I think it can be as many as 15 or so.

Damn Canucks stole the North Pole. Now I'm getting pissed. It's time to send the Boy Scouts in to occupy the country, set up a new puppet government and move the North Pole back where it belongs. I never did trust those Husky humpers.;)
