How do I make my dvd-rom region free in Windows XP?

I've heard it's different than in other OS's where the region is determined by the firmware (which can be flashed to region-free). I heard that Windows XP tries to force it's own setting of the region inside the OS or inside some software rather than reading it from the firmware, is that true? I just want my dvd-rom to be region free. Thanks guys!

Go under device properties. One of the tabs for your DVD ROM drive should allow you to change the DVD region. However, there is a counter on the number of times you can change your region. I guess Windows writes to the firmware. I'd still look into a permanent firmware flash though if you frequently view movies that are encoded for different regions. There's a site that has different firmware for just about every drive known to man....can't think of it though off the top of my head.
