You actually timed it?? Would you be that much more productive if Word opened 7 seconds sooner? If you are repeatedily opening and closing Word, then just open it up during system boot time, minimize it and maximize when needed..

If Word was taking a min or more to load, then I can see where you'd have something to do..but 7 seconds?? Regards

what operating system are you using?

win98 and later have built in routines starting your commonly used programs faster.

program loading often depends on HDD speed, but that HDD is fast ;-)

anyway, i just opened mine... word 2k.

takes around 7 seconds to load too. i have 7200 RPM IDE drives in a RAID 0 array...

word is bloated imho. it's loading normal.dot and all that stuff.

Do you have the office icon in your start up folder?

The fastest any word has ever started up for me was when I first got my pentium pro 200 using Nt 3.51 with word 95. I think it actually started up before I clicked the icon.

In word, go to tools-options. Then the tab file locations. Look where the word-startup files are and empty that folder.

Also word has an "empty" template named normal.dot but that also contains previously used macros. If you remove that normal.dot, word will create a new really empty one. Do this while word is closed.

Get Office XP... after the first startup of Word, it remains in memory... meaning it will startup under a sec, everytime. I love XP, ;)

firmpete, nothing...

i use normal.dot to keep my customized menus.

and that folder only had one file, and removing it did not help.

I don't know what would be causing it to load that slowly, but it looks like others have some good suggestions. Anyway, mine (word 2000) loads in about 1 second on this system:
AMD K6-2 400 MHz, 192 MB RAM, 4.3 GB 5400RPM WD hard disk, Windows 2000 Pro, etc.

Usually it will start a lot faster under 2k compared to 98/ME. The reason for that is that 2k itself useses a lot of the libraries MS Office uses. Therefore, those libraries are already loaded at start up.
