in the old forum you could make a link, but change the entire link to a single word or words like this CPUs and Overclocking

but i don't know how to do it with the new forum. when you click on 'insert link' it does not ask you like the old forum did. can someone tell me how to do it?

thanks for that list... it would seem highly inconvenient to do that for every link every single time though 🙁
that pop-up box when making links was much less of a hassle

i guess i'll have to do it though, and hope there is a more refined method in the future

There is a pop-up box to enter enter URLs. There's just no pop-up box to enter the text you want.

http://www.google.com/"]http://www.google.com/[/URL]

You end up with something like this, but with [URL=" in front of all that. Just add the text you want where the red letters are. That is hi-lighted for you so you can paste text or start typing immediately.
I'm using the Standard Editor

{url=link}words{/url}

Pretty simple really, just paste the link and you can have a working Link in 5-10 seconds.
