I asked the same question a few weeks back. Theres no easy way to do it. It takes a long time to recode. I use Nero Vision.. or was using until it keeps freezing up on me everytime now when i try to recode.

NTI DVD MAKER has options to make a DVD VIDEO_TS or SUPER VCD or DVD FIT(TM), or Cinematic Video (TM)

any of these make the .avi play on my dvd player?

DVD VIDEO_TS is the dvd format

SVCD would work too if you have a Pioneer player or something that can play VCD

Recoding is easy, it just takes a long time. Simple as, select file, next next next.

I would rather buy a $30 DVD player that can play DivX/XviD. The time you put in to encode AVI to MPEG2 is not worth it, imo.

Which is why I start the encode just before I go to bed/work/out for the day.

Run it overnight. I convert a dozen and a half avi's overnight every now and then. It's not a big deal.

Put your PS on one of those timers, and have it power down/power up every 3 hours. Have a script run at startup to begin conversions.

3 hours should be enough right?

or adjust it to 4 hours...

If we're talkin' 1 video, 3 hours should be enough. I once had a conversion go for 24 hours then fail. Booo!
