How do I make a CAT 5 Crossover Connection?

Connected laptop with desktop machine via CAT 5 crossover. Are the computers "smart enough" to know they are hooked together?

Both machines use Win XP Home. Trying to copy folders to laptop for Backup prior to wipe and reformat on Desktop.

It appears that the machines are not connected at all via CAT 5 Cable... How do I get them to see one another for file swapping?

PLEASE HELP.

Thank you. I usually check the FAQs before posting but unfortunately the page doesn't explain how to make the connection. I did learn though that I'm doing as I suspected, a NIC to NIC connection...

I was told this was supposed to be straightforward. I thought the second machine would "appear" like it usually does in my wireless config...

Straight Forward, and or Crossover from the outside might look the same.

The Rj-45 Jacks and Plugs are the same.

Crossover is a Type of cable, it has nothing to do with the OS or the Network software.

If you connect NIC to NIC you have to use Crossover CAT5 Cable (unless it is a special NIC that can self adjust to the type of Cable).

If you do not use the correct cable there will be No functional connection.

He's got the right cable, he needs help with the Windows XP "Create a network" setup.

Right-O I specifically got the CAT 5 crossover at the computer store and it fits the CAT 5 description... But... I wasn't sure how to "create the network" Still not sure...

just join the same "Workgroup" with both machines.

I'm assuming the "cable is disconnected" or whatever it says is gone after you connect the cat5, and also assuming you have a correctly working crossover cable.

You need manually assign IP's to both computers. Keep them close, like 10.0.0.2, and 10.0.0.3, and also as platinumgold said, use the same workgroup.
