How do I make a bootable floppy...stupid I know

Are you running W2k, W98, W95 or what?

I know under W98 you can go under CP --> Add / Remove Programs --> then there's a tab that says startup disk. An even simplier way on W95 / 98 is to go to a command prompt and type "sys a:" without the quotes. This does not work on W2k. You can use a W98 / startup disk on W2k but you won't have access to the HD if its NTFS.

Now since we're all friends here I'd have to recommend that flashing a BIOS is risky business. I'd think long and hard before trying it. What problem are you trying to correct? I'm speaking from experiece here. I've ordered one too many replacement BIOS chips.

Dear Friend

I have 2 Athlon XP chips on the way and I want my Epox 8KHA+ to completely rock with them (one or the other). I also bought a refurb DFI AK76 for 45 bucks that will run the other now that I sucessfully got the Epox flashed...I think. I know that this is risky but then again what is there in life that is easy to attain but at the same time is worth having??? I can only think of one thing but everyone will flame me for mentioning Gods Salvation through his Son Jesus...so I won't mention it.😀

You can download boot disks from bootdisk.com

and dont' fret about upgrading your bios, it's not THAT dangerous...there are instances where it screws up, but IMHO the benefits of running the newest version outweigh the *chance* that you could screw up your chip

anyway, if it DOES mess up, just go to badflash.com and order a new one..problem solved with 99% of mobo's out there

we give advise on computers here, we don't go to your church for bios advise, do we???

just a simple courtesy, and smiles back at you.

and, moving on, to flash a bios you need three things, one, a floppy disk, two, awdflash.exe and the expanded bin file on the floppy.

then, restart in msdos mode from the start>shutdown menu. this assumes your are already running an OS.

if not, then you can make a bootable disk by going to my computer and highlighting the floppy drive, right click to format, then chose to make a dos bootable floppy. you may then be able to fit the bin and Awdflash file on the same floppy. if not, then you need to copy it to your hard drive, and execute it from a pure dos prompt.

or, if your m/b has the option, you can just hit like alt f2 to start the flash update utility at the first boot screen, you still need to supply the bios via floppy or parked on the hard drive.

or you can hit F5 at boot to go to a pure dos prompt, then you can execute the bin file from a floppy with awdflash.exe.

hopefully one of these will help you.

good luck
