How do I make a "backup" of my computer's current configuration so I can reformat the HDD and then have the programs bak

I'm giving a computer to a friend. i want to make a disc on a cd-r or even dvd-r disk. i want this disc to basically contatin a "copy" of what is on this computer right now (the programs and stuff), so when he gets 456875 spyware and adware on the computer, we can just format the drive and end up where we began.

how do i do this? thanks.

ghost it? or acronis true image is rather good as well.

ghost, but when you ghost the image back onto your harddrive, the spyware will be right there with it. I'd imagine that would be true of Acronis as well.

ill be "ghosting" before any spyware is on the computer. and when he getss spyware or whatever on there, i'll just wipe clean the HDD and then install the 'ghost"

Ghost it, and you get a free copy of LEGIT Norton Ghost when you buy the iomega external HD on sale tomorrow at CompUSSR (I think, this is what my dad told me when his company bought 4 of those hds). And you don't format when using ghost; you just tell it to restore an old image and it'll do everything else. Lastly, it's quick; a complete re-imaging of my 10 gig partition takes 5 mins.

It doesn't sound like the spyware is on there now, he's saying when his friend does get spyware they can just restore the image.

Symantec Ghost is good. I still use older version of Drive Image as well.

No, Ghost formats the partition before restoring the image.

yes, but the way I read the OP, the spyware is already on it. so the spyware will be on the image as well.

The problem is that he'll lose whatever he installs program wise. When you set it up, give him a seperate partition to put all his downloaded stuff on so it won't get toasted when you re-ghost it, and he'll (most likely you since your friend doesn't sound capable of owning a computer) just have to reinstall the software

read it again then. he is about to give his friend a computer. "when he gets 456875 spyware and adware on the computer" he will want to restore it to the way when he first gives it to him. its clean right now.
