I got their Data Lifeguard Tools 11 for DOS but there is no option to 'write zeroes'.
It says it's supposed to be there according to this Knowledgebase.

The Hard drive is a WD800JB

WD offers two families of utilites. Generally, 'Data Lifeguard' is an install/setup/copy/clone utility, and WDDIAG/DLGDIAG is a true drive diagnostic/repair utility.

You want the diagnostic utility for tasks such as writing zeros or testing/repairing bad/weak storage locations.

Hope this helps!

Try Steve Gibson's "SpinRite 6" - it can do non-destructive low level formatting. Version 6 handles NTFS nicely.
