i want to leave the computer running applications but dont want people to be able to mess with them, so can i set some kind of password?

In Mac OS X, all you have to do is click on your username in the upper right hand corner, click Login Window and you're all set. It leaves all your programs and apps open just like the Windows Key + L in XP.

The user name is only displayed at the upper right corner if OS X has more than one user account, but Aluvus' link is all you need.
