How do I know which temps to trust?

Ok I have an X2 5000+ BE currently running at 3.1 (15.5x200) @ 1.4 (is this too low?).

Anyway core temp reports idles of ~25C and Abit EQ reports 40-45C.

My system fails SP2004 after like 10 minutes, but the temp log for core temp never goes above 35C. I do however get a warning beep from one of these damn programs...

Also, does anyone understand how to use Abit EQ? The CPU fan speed always reads 50% and the system volume never changes so obviously the fans are either maxed 100% of the time or just at some random percentage the whole time. I thought they were supposed to vary depending on temps/load. My bios has options for target temp and tolerance which I understand, but then has options labeled start CPU fan control (percentage) and stop CPU fan control (percentage), same for 1 system fan. As far as I can tell, neither do anything.

I just installed a Blue Orb II and the fan speed reads 1700 in the bios, I cant figure out how to change it.

Thanks!

Edit, my system at stock fails after similar times, and the temps read exactly the same as they did at 3.1.

The heatsink fan is controlled automatically, but in your BIOS go to PC Health Status. Enable "CPU FANEQ Control." From there it looks like you can control when and how fast the fan spins, albeit the options don't seem that intuitive. You'll just have to play around with it and use Abit EQ to monitor any changes. But I'd say make the Target Temperature 35-45C, the Tolerance 5C, the Stop at 50%, and the Start above 75%. Play with this as much as you want to get the desired results, because your room temperature and hardware setup will affect the CPU temp.

If your system is failing stability tests at stock settings, then you should first make sure your RAM is running at the correct voltage, speed, and timings. Your temperatures look perfectly fine for your processor, even the higher ones reported by Abit EQ, but don't forget to check your system temps.

Hey thanks a lot for the help, I fooled around some more and followed Abit EQ more closely and now see that it spins up to 100% under load and my temps stay well under 75 (as recommended in the OC'ing sticky).

For now it seems my limit is 3.1 (15.5x200) @ 1.475 volts. Anything higher gives me a sumout error for core 1 in sp2004 after a few minutes. After looking on google this seems to be commonly caused by memory, not the cpu but the memory should be running slower at 16 compared to 15.5 due to the divider.

My memory is cheap and crappy, 2x1gb ddr667 corsair value but within a few days I plan on upping to 2x2GB of some good memory. Any suggestions for memory (lookin to spend around 100)?
