How do I know where a site is hosted at?

Precise location isn't always possible. You can try this graphical tracert: http://www.neotrace.com, but if the routers/servers don't return a physical location, you're SOL. You can make some educated guesses by the IPs returned by tracert (aka, if *.nyc.* exists in it, you can assume the route goes through new york city...), and you can do whois lookups on the domain (http://www.arin.net/whois/, network solutions' whois) and make some assumptions, but that's about it.
