How do I know if sata is allowed?

I have an OEM mobo from an hp pavilion (P4SD-LA) and it has connector ports on it for 2 SATA drives, but I don't see SATA mentioned anywhere in the bios so I'm a little skeptical. I've heard that some manufacturers disable it (dont know why). I just wanna be absolutely sure I will be able to use SATA before I buy the drive. Anyone have a clue?
