If you have a 1999 Jetta GLS IV then it would be the newer body style Jetta's. More rounded look to it. If you have a 1999 Jetta GLS III then the car would have a boxier look to it. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think thats the easiest way to tell.
The GLS III's had the boxy front fender and grill, and boxy trunk.
The GLS IV's have a more rounded profile, and have distinctive turn signals on both side fenders nears the passenger and drivers door.
