how do i know if i fried my chip?

I am not sure.....there does not appear to be any cosmetic damage, but my hsf has a funny mark/smell where the core of the cpu applied w/ asII was. I am unable to test the chip b/c the mobo i had was faulty and wouldnt post. Plz help!@

A mark on the CPU core that won't rub off is almost certainly a sign of a bad chip. Both fried tbirds I've seen were like this

there's nothing unusual about the marks, the babies get hot

anyway try your CPU on another PC to make sure

Did you see a yellow oil/ooze on the core/sink when you pulled off the hsf? That was the sign of my Bird's death...
