How do I kill regedit?..or lock Windows folder?

I'm trying to make my computer completely safe to surf on, as there are kids in the house, and recently I learned that my internet filter can be knocked out by deleting certain files via regedit. (I don't want to say how to do that online in case anyone might be tempted to do it)

What I want to be able to do is either delete regedit completely (will this work without harming XP?), or put a password on certain files/folders so they can't be deleted without a password. Can this be done?

Or maybe I should ask this: After installing an internet filter, what is the best thing to do after that to ensure that the filter can't be circumvented? I want as close to a foolproof system as I can get.

Thanks for your help, I truly appreciate it.

Give your kids a limited account to use and protect the registry keys and with ACLs, which are probably in place already.

I didn't know limited users could edit the registry that much...

There are ACLs on keys just like files, but if it's 3rd party software they probably don't set any permissions on their own keys.

That's stupid. Maybe they expect parents to do their job and watch their kids... 😕

Ok you're already over my head...

What are ACL's?

Access Control List. It's kind of like if you watched what your kids did. When they tried to do something wrong you told them no and stopped them.

Ok thanks for the help on the ACS option.

What I'd really like to pursue though is the answer to my first question...how do I lock the Windows folder from anyone being able to delete files from it?

Can regedit just be safely deleted from XP? And if the answer is "yes", are there still other ways for files to be edited anyway? (since regedit is hypothetically gone now)

All other helpful suggestions for solutions are welcome from anyone else reading this thread as well. 🙂

Make sure the kids use a non-administrator account. Set the permissions on regedit and regedit32 so that only the administrator can run them.

If I was your child I would delpart the system, set a Bios password, and solder the CMOS_clear gate closed!

Not at my house, well....not if you enjoy the use of your right hand anyway😉

If you were my child you wouldn't have a computer to use. 🙂

That wouldn't have stopped me from making a .22 machine pistol from wood at shop in school! hehehe! Good bye family pets! Should have bought me that computer, ya bastard!

When I was 6 I lived in 'the country' and all I had was my computer. Having it censored would have pissed me off to no end. I can understand trying to protect youngsters from trying to download porn, but if there smart enough to navigate the annoying topsites, or to use newsgroups, or set up a p2p app, then there is no way anything you install on the machine is going to stop them anyway.

Thanks for all your theories fellas, but I'm just looking for solutions. 🙂

So far I'm thinking the non-admin account access will work for now. Any other solutions though? I just want to do everything I can on my end so it's just not something I have to worry about.
