How do I kill an application from another computer on the network?

When I was playing UT today I got a hard lockup. Before I hit the reset switch, I got on my wife's computer and was able to access the hard drive on my computer from the command prompt and network neighborhood. I know there is a way to kill an app. on another computer in Linux, but how do I do it when my wife's computer has WinME and mine Win2000? It would really help when I get those annoying hang-ups not having to hit the reset switch every time. Thanks!

Well I was going to suggest PUList or another NT/Win2K ResKit utility, but I am hughly doubtful these will work under WinME. If you installed a Telnet service or something like the Remote Command Manager under Win2K, then you could open a remote session on Win2K and use "kill" to kill any processes.

I am unaware of what remote process management utilities are available for WinME. WinME may have a remote "kill" utility in its ResKit, but I haven't played enough with it to know for sure.

VNC may not give you the access you need for such a thing either. typically when a machine locks up like you describe, keyboard and mouse control are unavailble and the graphic interface is frozen. A cmd line session is what is usually needed to do any administration.

Two suggestions for now until someone with better knowledge can provide something more definitive:

1. Check the WinME CD for additional tools and utilities, even a ResKit. I don't have WinME readily available at the moment, so don't know what is on the CD.

2. Try searching on several shareware/freeware sites like tucows or winfiles.com for the type of tools you are looking for.

Thanks Spiff, I will look for 'reskit' on the Win ME cd and do some more research on this. I thought it would be easy since it is fairly easy to do in Linux, but it appears to be a problem in Windows. I have heard of people using telnet to access another computer, but I don't know how to start a session on my wife's computer to access my computer. Any other ideas?

easy is dependent on the OS. It's easy with NT and Win2k but Win9x and likely WinME require third party software.

ResKit is short for Resource Kit... additional technical refence materials and useful tools
