How Do I Keep Crap programs from starting up when i boot up my comp?

I turn on my comp
and i can press Ctrl+alt+Del and it shows like 20 things running!
how do i get it to where i can start up my comp without having to Ctrl+alt+del all of em!?
some 1 please help me and my crap comp!

go to the start menu, then run, then type in MSCONFIG

go to the Startup tab. Click any ones you dont want to load. DONT TURN OFF ANYTHING YOU DONT KNOW

If the programs run once u startup, you can go to Start>Run>type msconfig>go to startup>uncheck the startup programs you don't want>press OK>restart computer

Assume you're running Win98. Besides uninstalling programs that run processes in the background, you can check the Startup folder of the Start menu at Start/Programs/Startup. Finally, there is a registry folder where programs are called at startup, but I forget where it is in Win98. In Win2K, it's at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

don't forget to select "selective startup"...and don't uncheck anything with sys or system files in it's path description.

Start by turning off the ones you recognize i.e. icq, aol, msn msngr, windows media player, real player etc....if you paste what you have than we can tell you


I have tons of programs that would like to start w/ windows but only have two selected for start up audio hq , and my video drivers...the rest are system files necesarry for operation

ptsnoop sounds scary...get rid of it, hpfsched sounds like a hewlett packard program/task scheduler you can take that off to...a second opinion would help w/ that

okay, Explorer is the only thing that you need running. If you close everything else, you'll be okay. If you close "Explorer," your computer will either shut down or reboot.
