how do i join a credit union?

You may not be able to.

I use a federal and state credit union, but TBH the only good thing about them is the interest checking (~1%). I also think the money market interest at the credit union is about .5-1% higher as well when compared to Wachovia, for example. They market low-interest loans and so on but I found a better deal on my mortgage through another bank. The loans for car purchases also have a higher interest rate than many people can get on their own through other banks or incentives at a dealership (especially if the brand has their own bank like Ford does).

Point being, a creit union isn't going to hook you up. The benefits are smaller than one might think, but its still better to use if you're eleigible to get into one. Most loans etc can be matched or beat with a little shopping around.

Credit Unions have really relaxed their membership criteria. You just have to search for the right CU to join.

Where we refinanced our car, you can join if you attend church, go to school, live or work in the downtown area.

ok here's another question, are there lenders out there that will allow you to start paying off the loan a year from now?
