I have Win98 SE but it is the upgrade version which means it looks for a previous version of Windows. If no Windows is found it won't install. I just bought a new drive that I want to do a fresh install on but the way things are I will have to load Win95 first so the Win98 upgrade will work.

Isn't there some way to get around this? Surely one can put some of the Win95 files on a floppy, then copy those files to the newly formatted hard drive so Win98 will install.

POR FAVOR!

Orrrrrr............. you could boot into DOS using a Win98 boot disk and after enabling your CD-Rom, you could plop in that little old Win98SE disk and begin the install and when it asks for proof of Windows ownership, you'd take out the SE disk and put in your Win95 disk...

After it finds your Win95 disk, you'll get a prompt to put the Win98SE disk back in, and you'll go on from there...

also if i remember correctly, when it asks for your previous version of windows, just insert a win95 startup disk in the floppy drive and that should satisfy the win98 installer

Just the startup disk will not suffice here.

Definitely go with the CD swap - works every time. You could also dig up those Win 3.x floppys - works also. I also got it to work with Windows386 - had a machine with a 5.25 inch floppy at the time.

You can boot off the Win98 cd, fdisk and format the drive, then run your setup after the second reboot.
