How do I install Win 98 on my system after installing Win 2k?

Hi,

I have a drive that has Win 98 and Win 2k on it, the Win 2k on that drive was installed after I installed Win 98. So the bootloader ot NTLDR (or whatever it is) is on the drive that has Win 98.

I bought a nice new WD800JB that I want to use as my new drive for OSes. I installed Win 2k on the this second drive. My primary boot partition is the Win 98 partition on the first (slower) drive.

I tried to install Win 98 on my new drive, but it wouldn't let me choose the installation partition, and I was afraid it would overwrite my current boot partition so I cancelled installation.

Is there a way for me to get Win 98 on this second (in the partition created for it) and also is there a way to move the boot loader and all the boot files to my new drive?

I remember running into major problems in the past when I tried installing Win 98 after installing Win 2k - can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help in advance.

And there is yet another way if you're willing to pay a little cash. I run a dual boot -- Win XP and DOS -- using PartitionMagic by PowerQuest. You should use at least Version 7.0. I need to dual boot DOS to run some legacy software. I also run PM on an older machine, dual booting Win 98SE and DOS. I've used PartitionMagic for years and have never lost a byte of data; it is a program I swear by. I'll admit, though, that its behavior is a little funky sometimes with Win XP. (Version 8.0 may have fixed this.) But it works! I've never used NTFS, however; I use FAT16 for DOS and FAT32 for Windows. The two peacefully coexist; in Win 98SE I can even defrag the FAT16 DOS partitions without any damage. Haven't tried that in Win XP, as I only have one DOS partition, which is hidden from XP.

A big advantage of using this program is that you can resize and move partitions easily, and can also copy partitions from one location to another. I use it to make a full copy of my Win XP partition elsewhere on the disk before doing something questionable. If my XP gets funky (never has), or if I just decide I don't want something there that I've experimented with, I can delete the primary partition and copy it back from the saved partition. Viola!

Finally, the program works with various operating systems, including Linux. If an OS that you install wipes the BootMagic boot manager that comes with PartitionMagic (Some Windows installations like to do this.), don't worry; just reinstall BootMagic (quick and easy), and it detects your bootable OSs.

Sorry if I sound like an advertisement; I just like this product! It has served me well.

Hi Kanderva.

I actually have PM 8.0 and it really won't let me install Win 98 on what it sees to be a second disk. I really want to move all my boot sector files to the new drive so that drive can be 'Drive 1'. Im still trying to see how I can do that. I realize after reading the faq that installing 98 after 2k isn't too hard, but I really want to move the whole boot loader and MBR to the new drive so I can remove the first drive if needed.
