i'm using my parents computer now because they gave it to me for free (free is always good)...but they forgot the administrator password and there's no way i'm going to reinstall windows or anything drastic. how do i install simple programs like quake 3 without a password?

umm...so i put a program on the computer that gives all my passwords to somebody, meanwhile they get "emailed" to me? i'll use this as a last resort but thanks anyway.

any other suggestions?

I have a utility that runs off a boot disk that lets you clear the password. I can't remember the name, but I'll check it when I'm at work tomorrow if you haven't found one yet.

i really dont need access to the administrator account...but i guess there's no other way to install anything :\. so far i haven't found anything usefull because i do NOT want to reset the password...

edit: thanks for the last link bruceb. i don't have access to a copy of windows (does it have to be the original?) but i can get one tomorrow 🙂

Why don't you want to reset the password?

Are you failing to mention that you're not SUPPOSED to be getting around this "forgoten" password??? 😉

Seriously, there is no other way. If there was, it would defeat the purpose of being able to limit people to not being able to install stuff.

I have a bootable cd I downloaded a couple years ago that I use. I think it was Petter Nordahl-Hagen's utility, but I can't remember now, and don't feel like booting up the cd. It will reset the password. I don't see why you wouldn't want to reset it? Unless there is something you are not telling us... I wouldn't be surprised.

I heard it was called NTPASSWD or something like that. It was a linux distro that could be ran off of a CD and it would let you change the password. I hope this helps.

Search for EBCD. It's a unix based utility that you boot from a CD. It allows you to change the admin password. Works like a charm for me.

i tried the password recovery site where i get the password mailed to me. no screen which is supposed to appear and magically give me information to copy down ever popped up(floppy and cd). all the other password reset sites didn't work...i tried about 4 blanks floppies and they all had some error...i'm just about to give up on this computer.

do you have any accounts other than administrator on your pc? are any of them computer administrator accounts? if so just change the admin account's password taht way. if not just do a fresh install and have all the setings the you like them with an admin password you can remember. 🙂

You can just copy the Quake 3 directory. It doesn't need any registry keys.

Just \quake3\baseq3\*.pk3
and \quake3\quake3.exe

All it needs. Then install the latest patch to \quake3 and start quake3.exe with a start path of \quake3, enter your CDkey when asked, then have fun.

ok i'm just going to reinstall windows...but one problem. i have the cd but no cd key...ARGH!! are there any programs to find the cd key? (that would defeat the purpose wouldn't it...)
