How do I install Linux from my USB CD-Rom?

I recently lost the use of my cd-rom because it broke so I am forced to use my external USB cd writer as my cd rom. This works fine under windows because thats where i set it up.

Now I need to reinstall Linux mandrake 8.1. Is there ANY WAY POSSIBLE to install it from a USB cd-rom that is UNDETECTED by my BIOS?

Any Help is greatly appreciated thank you. By the way...i have 3 nights for your answers cause im downloading the Mandrake 8.1 ISO on 56k (its 2 648mb files)... so no hurry 🙂

If your usb cdrom is supported, it is possible. You are going to have to use a boot disk with a kernel that has usb-support and then ctrl+alt+F# (#= whatever f key you decide) and switch to a different terminal and set the cdrom up.
