How do I install classic Mac OS 9 for use with OS X's classic mode?

I have an OS 9.2.2 install cd and tried copying the system folder into a folder I made on the primary partition but I couldn't get it to work. I was able to select the system folder in OS X's classic options but it would give me an error on startup. It's my roommate's iBook so I don't have it in front of me now but the error was something along the lines of not able to boot because it wasn't installed correctly. It told me that I can't just install it by copying it to another drive.

From what I've read so far that should have worked. So the question is, how do I install it then? Can I not use a regular OS 9 install cd? From what I heard the new macs come with OS 9 on their recovery cds but my roommate doesn't have the cd with him. Is the image that's on the recovery cd different that of the regular install cd?

Macs made in the past few years can't boot OS 9, so Classic has to be installed from the cds that came with the machine.

true. in mac os x, u don't "boot" the classic environment. all OS X versions prior to Tiger have Mac OS 9.2.2 installed. goto the control panel and turn on the classic mode. that will let you run any app the is for classic. i don't think you can dual boot Mac OS 9.22 and OS X. anyway, good luck.

untrue. there are some (older) eMacs able to boot OS 9 natively. I know at least the 700Mhz model does, a quick google tells me the 800Mhz ones do as well.
