The subject line pretty much says it all. On a new machine, once I'm in a directory I've set up, what is the command to copy all the files I need from the CD so I can install from the hard drive?

Thanks.

Go to the Win98 directory on the CDROM.

Then use the command copy *.* c:\win98 (assuming that Win98 is the source file directory on the hard drive).

setup

or, if you want to force ACPI, setup /p j
or if you want to force no ACPI, setup /p i

Remember ACPI is a little different in Win98 and not quite as drastic on the system as Win2K's ACPI implementation.

If you've got the room......it's a faster install and you never
have to use the CD for changes....it just goes to the cabs on the
harddrive......

As far as speed yes, it is faster but it's not really THAT fast. The main benefit of installing from the HD is you'll never need your OS CD again. HOWEVER, I install from CD but I never need my OS CD either. ;)

You're kidding, right?

(installing new drivers) "Please insert Windows 98 CD Rom"
(installing new hardware) "Please insert Windows 98 CD Rom"
(changing network settings) "Please insert Windows 98 CD Rom"

Is there a reason you want to install it from your CDROM?

hehe

I'll add this though... there are a lot of people that still use this method when installing Windows 2000... You're wasting HD space here. Windows 2000 copies all the contents of the "i386" folder within the operating system folder. You'll never be prompted for the Windows 2000 CD, under "normal" circumstances.

Do a check on your hard drive after a "fresh" install in W2k. It's over a GIG!

Installing Win2000 with the CD is RECOMMENDED. :)
