I've recorded several MIDI files into wav files. Since I am not aware of anyway to go direct from MIDI -> WAV, I had to manually play the MIDI files while simultaneously recording it on the same PC. It worked fine, but the volume isn't very loud at all. The trouble is, if I increased the recording volume, i'd get a lot of clipping, so I had to keep the record volume somewhat low. The music is fantasy/classical so there is a lot of range in the volume.
Now I need to find a way to make these wav files louder. I tried normalizing them, but the effect was barely noticeable. I've also tried mp3gain, but it doesn't seem much better than normalizing them, and it seems to introduce clipping.
I believe what I need is some form of dynamic sound compression, not normalizing. Can anyone recommend some freeware that would allow me to do that? Or maybe some other recommendations?
