How do I increase my number of half-open connections...?

I thought I was having a problem with my connection due to the number of half-open connections that I had, so I restored the file that changes the number of half-open connections allowed through the use of SFC /scannow and my XP CD.

All my surfing has felt a bit... off since then, and I want to increase the limit to something like 50. I know there's a patcher program, but nobody seems to have mirrored it and the site it originates from doesn't even have it anymore.

Does anyone know where I can find the software that used to be here? Barring that, is there another way that I could change this value to 50?

In case it wasn't obvious, I'm talking about TCPIP.sys. As always, any and all help is appreciated.

Unless you go to non-existant sites alot, you'll never see this, are you sure it's not just a placebo effect?

I open clusters of web pages a lot, and it just seems like it used to be snappier than it is now. That might be placebo, might not. However, I can't get my torrents to start. At all. 8 seeds, 500 seeds, it doesn't matter. No dice. I'm pretty sure that's because of the half-open connection issue.

are you getting the half open event id in your even viewer / system?

while upping the limit may help torrents, i doubt it will affect browsing. the limit is 10 half-open connection per second...not total. unless you're going to an extremely high number of sites that time out, those connections dont stay open for long at all.

toadeater: I couldn't get it download until just now, so I'm pretty sure that it was down. Thanks for the heads-up all the same.

jlazzaro: Yeah, I had 4226 in the Event Viewer; it was the only reason I was asking for the patch in the first place. It's not showing up because of the browsing though; only the torrents are doing it. Seems like it was mostly placebo as far as browsing, but torrents were definitely doing it.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Alright, I don't know what the hell is going on, but I simply cannot download the file from my house. I've tried in Opera and IE; no dice either way. With IE the file never shows up (yes, I know where I'm saving it), and with Opera a file shows up but it gives me an "Unexpected end of file" error when I open it with WinRAR. Can someone download and mirror this somewhere for me? I would really appreciate it.

Alternatively, if someone could help me figure out why in the hell I wouldn't be able to download that file -- neither English nor German works -- that would be cool as well.

In a moment of inspiration, I checked my anti-virus logs to see if I could find the problem that way.

Lo and behold, NOD32 reports the patch as a thing more terrible than death which cannot be allowed to remain on my computer. Running an initial full scan is probably how I lost the file in the first place (had it archived on my PC). It all becomes... so clear to me now.

I've changed the limit, so everything should be gravy from here on out. Thanks for all the help!

There's a reason for that, installing random 3rd party drivers onto your system is incredibly stupid.
