How do I implement TRIM in XP?

Hi,

I'm using a Kingston 30GB SSD as my boot drive in Windows XP. It supports TRIM, but how can I get it to implement TRIM while it's operational so I don't have to occasionally use HDDErase on it? Also, I did clone my previous HDD to it, but how do I know whether my cloning is aligned properly?

I also have a second Kingston 30GB SSD as my boot drive in Windows 7, but when I tried to use an Acronis image on it, it refused to run without repair and I ended up doing a clean install to get it loaded. What could I be doing wrong there? (After the clean install, it seems to be working well, but I'm concerned that I won't be able to use a back up image in the future...)

Thanks, noel54

Folks,

I just learned that Acronis True Image 11 doesn't support Windows 7. So that explains the trouble I had cloning my new SSD with 11... The newer version, Acronis True Image Home 2010 does, however. Looks like I need to upgrade.

images are a problem with SSDs due to alignment (your cloning and restoring program needs to know how to properly align partitions to SSD, misalignment means it works, but it is slower then it should be)... it is better to back up your data and do a clean install using windows 7 itself to partition the drive.

you can't get XP to trim, but you can use certain tools to manually (or set it to use a schedule) send the trim command for all currently deleted files.
Intel drives do so with the intel SSD Toolbox, and there is a tool called wiper.exe works with indilinx chipset drives (sold by a variety of manufacturers)
set it to do a free space trim every week.

taltamir,

Thanks, I'll look for the Intel SSD Toolbox and the wiper.exe app. Then as I understand it, set it to do a free space trim every week. I'm not sure it will work with the Kingston SSD, but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks again, noel54
