first you find a good enough connection in order to charge people, then you find customers.

then you need to get a static ip (or a dynamic ip with software to resovle a name).

then if they want to use their own domain names, it gets trickier.

this is a start to see if you want to continue.

There hundreds of Server programs, manyfree some 100K in size. It depends what would like to do.

The hard part is conneting to the Server from the Interent.

Totally overkill for a webserver (unless your anand/ebay size).

I run 6+ sites on a Dual PII 400 w/384MB linux. Used to use a PII 400 w/512MB and Win2k. You don't need a fast machine to be a webserver most of the time. Pickup a PII on ebay for 50-60 before you ruin a Dual Processor system doing something like that.

Good info.

Just curious what kind of broadband do you have?

Does it come with a static IP?

I use Midsouth Road Runner (Time Warner Cable). I have a residential package that is limited to a dynamic IP address 450/3Mbit. One thing I noticed about my connection, my IP hasn't changed in over 6 months. In the event that it does, I use a program called 'directupdate' to instantly update my DNS A records at Zoneedit.com.

I was skeptical about how well a website would run on a PII and a residential cable connection, but I haven't had any problems to speak of.

My e-mail server is 'co-located' at a friends house who has a Static IP, as most major ISPs block e-mail from dynamic IPs.
