You can try AnalogX's SimpleServer:WWW. It's small and extremely simple to use. Don't know how well it'd handle numerous people downloading from it, but it's worth a shot before setting up something major.

i remember using that in windows.

honestly, you will run out of bandwidth before your computer/software gets stressed.

i have serv-u, but i'd like to think i'm rather proficient in it, but i didn't want to hassle people into using passwords. That, and i wasn't sure if i could post a direct link to a file using some sort of anonymous login.

Sure you can, it's easy.

Just make the link like this...

ftp://username:password@blahblahblah.com

or...
ftp://username:password@192.168.0.1

Of course, with your IP address.

Edit: Okay, that didn't work.

ftp://username: password@blahblah.com/whatever/whatever.???

or

ftp://username: password@youripaddress/whatever/whatever.???

take the space out between : and P though.

does win2k pro have that?

yes, but it's got more limitations than advanced server.

if you want to use simpleserver or IIS on 2K Pro, then you better hope you ISP doesn't block ports 21 and 80, or no one will be able to connect to you. if you use Serv-U you can change the incoming port and get around that. your links would look like "ftp://user: pass@address: port" but without the spaces (had to put those in to avoid the damn smilies.) good luck! :)

You can always change the port and put the port in the address.

Example: http://www.address.com:89
