how do i get to command prompt before windows loads?

Hey- I"m trying to copy a file from a windows 2000 CD (ntoskrnl.exe) and copy it over to my laptop, because I keep receiving an error that says i need to replace the file. However, I can't get into command prompt, even when booting from the CD. Actually to be honest I"m not quite sure at all how to get into command prompt, i've tried shift+f10, and it doesn't seem to do anything. Any help would be great.
