How do I get this job?

It's summer, school is out, I have no money, my wishlist is bigger than ever, and I need a job. But I don't want any regular, burger flipping job.

I was just wondering how does one get to work in auto shops or become an auto body specialist or a customizer? Do you need to go to a technical school to learn the trade? I was wondering if I can just go to any shop and ask if they will mentor me to gain experience and expertise.

I watch American Choppers on the Discovery Channel and the work they do seems a lot of fun.

I've always wondered about getting into car customizing, but from what I know you pretty much have to start at the bottom, ie oil changes at Jiffy Lube etc unless you go to a trade school like Universal Technical Institute or Wyoming Tech.
