How do I get the XP welcome screen back?

For some reason, my login screen in XP Pro (I usually select my login name/icon and then type my password) reverted to the old username/password box like in Windows 2000. I want my old Welcome screen back, because I want to play with some logon themes.

I tried going into the Control Panel, into User Accounts, and changing the way users log on or off by selecting "Use the Welcome screen" and also fast user switching, but that didn't do it. I even restarted - nada.

Any ideas?

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon in the registry. Is there a String value called GinaDLL?

Download and install the windows power toys tool - TweakUI from microsoft. It has tons of options and welcome screen thing is one of'em I think.

But I have had this happen to be before as well. I had to remove the use welcome screen. it apply options. then re enable it and it apply options. that fixed it for me

You aslo mentioned that you are using XP Pro. If it is a member of a domain, you cannot use the welcome screen

Go to User accounts in the Control Panel

under User accounts, click 'Change the way users log on or off'

then click 'use Welcome screen'

all done 🙂
