I am replacing the heatsink/fan on my t-bird 1.2 GhZ and the old heatsink/fan left some residual thermal compound and the top of the cpu die, how can I remove this so I can put the new heatsink on? or do I not need to remove the residue. Thanks in advance

Clean it with nail-polish remover using q-tips. Then when you have most of it off, use rubbing alcohol. Definetely clean it before installing the new heatsink

Be sure to use the acetone-based nail-polish remover. The non-acetone stuff doesn't do anything and leaves a film.

im kinda new to this stuff, so do you have to take off that residue everytime you get a new heatsink and fan?

I do. Maybe it's because I'm fairly new to it as well, and I'm a bit overzealous at doing everything "right". When I look at pictures like these (last 2) and this, I begin to wonder how much time I waste trying to get my cpu clean each time.;)

Carefully remove the 'bulk' with a razor blade held very flat to the base of the heatsink. Remove the rest with 'acetone' or lots of other compouds. Lap the heatsink if it turns you on and apply a thin layer of A.S. and chill that baby !!.
