How do I get rid of those annoying INFO BALLOONS?

Running Win2k and loving it. BUT, I can't seem to find the setting I need to change to get rid of those little balloons. I'm not talking about the little tiny ones that show up on almost every button when you pass the mouse over it... I'm talking about the ones that say stuff like "Start Here" and points to the "start" button when Windows first loads, and the one that says "Connected at 36600kpbs" and points at the modem icon when I first dial up. They look like little comic-strip speech balloons, and there's a big "I" icon, like as if to say "here's some Important Information". They are sooooo annoying.

Anyone know what I'm talking about. Sorry I don't have any better way to describe them.

Thanks for your interest, if you have any clues I'd love to hear them.

I do not have a modem, so I do not know what your connection thingee is. The other problem, however, seems odd. You have Win2k and you get an animated "Start Here"??? I have never seen that in Win2k; I thought it died out with the 9x versions. It would be the little arrow that slides and bounces into the start menu button, right? I cannot help you with that, but I'm really interested that you have it at all. I have installed Win2k over 40 times at work and never seen that...:confused:

Ronin, can you tell me what the start menu thing is? I still do not have an understanding of what he's writing about. Thanks.

no offense but wasn't it obvious how to make that thing stop? It never comes on (or shouldn't, at least) after you turn off the startup Windows Welcome Box (the dialog box in the link with the "show this screen at startup" button). Maybe you use that thing...

Sorry jeebus, but I wish it were the obvious one. CPORonin's post has a link that has a picture of it. (Thanks Ronin!) It's not the big one in the middle of the screen, it's the smaller one in the bottom left corner. But I don't get that particular one anymore, I get that TYPE of balloon, only it's on the RIGHT side where the modem/connect icon displays when I'm connected. When the connection is initiated the balloon pops up and informs me of my connection speed. And the little balloon doesn't go away until I click on it with my mouse. UGH, very pesky. As far as the littly tiny pop-ups that show up whenever you move your pointer over most buttons... that one is fine, I like it and find it useful.
I'm gonna try some of the suggested registry hacks posted here and see what happens.

I'm goin' in folks... wish me luck!

I'll let you all know what I find, if I find it.

I know that it is the little balloon thing in the corner (sorta implied by the title of the thread) but that balloon, typically, only stays as a nuisance until you turn off the larger window--the big stupid one with the check box. the larger window being on must tell Win2k to treat you like a small child and lead you by the hand to do everything. When you turn it off, the balloons go off (or they have in my 50+ installations of Win2k).

I now know what you are talking about with the little pop-up for the connection speed. It also happens if you are on 10/100 ethernet and you pull the cable out and put it back in. It alerts you to the connection speed and will not go away until you click on it. Yeah, hopefully the info-tip registry hack will make it go away. :)

Okay, update time.

Ladi and CPORonin, I've tried all your suggestions on the links and THEIR links and followed THOSE links and poked around each site your links led to... Most of them dealt with the little tiny tooltips which I WANT TO KEEP... but I tried them anyway. (Tweaking my registry doesn't bother me, cause I always keep backups!) Nothing I could find on your links would help get rid of that annoying little balloon on modem connect. Still there, still laughing at me and screaming &quot;You'll never get rid of meeeeeee!!! Ahhh Ha ha ha ha!!!&quot; (Belive me, it has quite the maniacal voice, kind of like Ozzie Osbourne, where he laughs in the beginning of &quot;crazy train&quot;.) (No, I am not a fan, I just remember the laugh...)

Anyway, looks like I'm stuck with this thing FOR NOW. But I'm not giving up.
