How do I get rid of "New programs installed" message?

In WinXP on my dad's system, everytime I access the start menu, it gives that little yellow message tip pointing to the All Programs menu which says "new programs installed".

How do I get the damn thing to stop saying that? I think it stops if you run the "new" program, but I have no clue what it is. Is there anyway to find out what program(s) it's referring to? Something I can look up in the registry?

Thanks!

Right Click the start menu and go to properties.
Click on Start menu tab and then customize button.
Click on Advanced tab and within there is a check box for: Highlight newly installed programs.
Otherwise you could go into Administrative Tools and then Services.
Stop the Alerter service. This will affect other things though.

Thanks, that worked, but I have a follow-up question now... what causes certain programs to be marked as new? The programs it was claiming were "new" were installed quite a while ago and have been used multiple times, but it still shows them as new. Is something screwed up here, or is there something more to it (like they show as new until you run it X times, etc)?

Yeah, it will probably remain new until you run it a certain amount of times. Although, it could also be timed...maybe...I don't know.
