Hey
I have a couple of programs that I don't want on the taskbar and I don't know how to get rid of them, so can someone help me out please?

Or do I have to DL a program to do that? Thanks guys/gals

Just cut a small piece of black electrical tape and stick it onto the monitor. It works great! :)

Ok ok :p

1) right-click the Start Button and choose Properties, then switch to the Taskbar tab.

2) click the Customize button

3) find the icons you want to always hide, and set them that way

Thanks, but doesn't that just hide the icons, I would like to make them not be used. Sorry, I guess I didn't make that clear, my fault.

Ohhh, I gotcha now. Like Quicktime always loading its dumb Q icon at startup? Tried MSConfig? Start > Run > msconfig.

There is no universal solution - many tray icons are controlled by their parent software. In general, go to Programs, Startup, and remove some that way. Programs like Quicktime are controlled internally. Example:

1. Open Quicktime Player
2. Under Edit, select Preferences
3. Select QT Preferences
4. Uncheck the box that puts the icon in the tray.

This process will usually work within any offending program.

Tray icons usually indicate those programs that run in background on startup automatically. Yes - some can be changed in MSCONFIG, Startup Tab.

Corkyg's ideas are the desired method to remove tray icons.

For a quick fix that's easily changed back, a free program I found out about at
http://www.theflyingpenguin.com/penguin_blog.shtml#spyware-removal called "Start up Control Panel" at http://www.mlin.net shows almost all startup programs (from the registry too!) and allows you to uncheck them to keep them from loading. Makes for a clean running system, and is easily restored if a problem develops. YMMV
