How do I get Nero to burn at 48x (Using Lite-on 48x12x48)?

I've just updated nero to the latest version (5.5.9.9) but my CD Writer only allows 32X burning. Any ideas?
I understand that the latest Lite-on drives autodetect the maximum speed of the medium, but I thought that was done on the fly rather than before burning starts...

It detects the media when you insert the media and while it burns.

It sounds like you are using media it doesn't like for 48x burning OR nero is stuck at that rating. To see which is the issue, start nero, click recorder menu, choose recorder. From there pick your burner and then click on the Options. Disable smartburn. Restart nero. Now re-enable smartburn. If it still says 32x then it sounds like the burner doesn't like that media. You can always disable smartburn and burn at 48x but it most likely result in a bad burn.

I would e-mail Lite-on to see if they have an updated firmware version; Nero automatically recognizes the speed of your burner by scanning the IDE channel which in turn polls burner's firmware. If you are running WinXP, go to Device Manager and check the Properties for your burner; if it's shows up as 32x then it's definitely faulty firmware.
