when I try to install the new drive it says windows will only allow it to partition 137gb, but that there might be downloads available that will allow me to use the full 200gb capacity.

windows xp
IWill KD266 motheboard
ALI® M1535D+ South bridge chipset

if that helps any.

Probably the motherboard is old enough that it does not support 48-bit addressing, so it only recognizes the first 137GB of a hard drive. A BIOS upgrade may be available from the manufacturer to fix this (I don't know about that particular model; it's VERY old).

Beyond that, you also need Service Pack 1 installed with Windows XP to recognize the full capacity of the drive (although this is included on most WinXP install disks nowadays).

That's what I was thinking the problem was... the motherboard isn't THAT old. but I am not really certain.

I have had this problem before too with a Maxtor drive. Did the Harddrive come with the Maxblast 3 software? If not you can download it from here. If you use this to partion and format the drive it seems to make it the right size. Of course you will still need SP1 or I think Maxtor might have some registery entry you can download to enable it. If its not a maxtor you can see if it has something similar for you to format it with. Hope this helps! :)
