how do I get my passwords...

I want to do a complete reformat and reinstall of my operating system (Win XP from Win 98 - which is now 3 YEARS old). However, I have a ton of passwords that are enabled automatically, but I don't have many of them written down. A buddy told me that I could actually get software that would collect all of the passwords on my system so that I can use them after I reinstall the operating system.

Does anyone here know how I might go about doing this??
