How do I get my Mitsumi 32X CD-RW to copy CD to CD?

Well I got a Mitsumi 32X CD-RW from Office Max and installed it with Nero 5.5 that came with it on my PC (running XP). Upgraded Nero to 5.58. Installed it on the same ide cable as the CD drive (with both set to Cable Ready jumper settings). It burns audio and data CD's fine, but it gave me a warning when I tried to burn them with on-the-fly (CD to CD) option, stating something to the effect that since both CD drives were on the same IDE bus, there was a potential prob with buffer underrun so it suggested that I copy to HD and then burn the disk when making CD copies. I've been doing that with good success but I'm wondering if I switch IDE cables so that the CD-RW and HD are on one and the CD is on the other -will that make a difference? (the question may be moot since there's no way I can get both the HD and CD-RW on the same IDE Cable).

How can I get the CD-CD burn option without running into the buffer underrun problem? My rig is a Dell P4 1.8 with 40G HD, 256 Meg RDRAM, 48X CD and Cendyne (Mitsumi) 32X CD-RW drive.

Appreciate any feedback.

I have some questions for you:

Why don't you try the CD to CD option, just select 'test only'. Or try a real burn, all you'll waste is one CD. Besides the drive has the ability to protect against buffer underrun problems, doesn't it?

Why did you set each CD drive to, what I assume you mean to be 'cable select' ? Why not master for one and slave for the other?

Thanks

Morkinva,

Thanks for the reply.

That's a good idea, not being very familiar with CD burners or the software, I didn't think of trying it in test only mode. I will give it a try and see what happens. At worst I could try it with a real CD and see what happens in the CD to CD mode.

As to your other question, I checked the Dell-factory installed CD drive as well as the HD and they were both set to "cable select". I called Dell customer support to see what their recommendation was and they said that I should also set the new CD-RW drive jumpers to "cable select" as well. The system found everything and it just added on the CD-RW as the "E" drive to complement my C (HD) and D (CD) drives.

Well I tried the copy on the fly method on an older (1999) game disk and it seemed to work okay. However, I tried to first either select the 'Test' or 'Test and Burn" options but they were not selectable. Any ideas on how I can re-enable those selections? When I first installed Nero 5.5 which came with the drive, it was available, but then I downloaded and installed an update to 5.58 and now I can not select those options. Do you think this came from installing the update? Any ideas as to how to re-enable these options? Should I just re-install the original 5.5 that came with the burner? Are there any substantive improvements in 5.58 that are not in 5.5? (at least I think its 5.58 - it could be version 5.8 - I forgot to check).

Thanks.
