Stupid thing always sounds like an aircraft engine. Even when I just stick a CD in and have no plans to use it, it goes on and on and on for like FIFTEEN MINUTES.

Broohaha, if you're talking about your CD-Rom drive, some are louder than others, just a fact of life. For example, my Tosh drive is loud as h*ll, but I still love it for it's features
My purty new black Plextor 52x has this silent feature where it slows everything down internally so it doesn't make a sound. Kinda nice for burning CD's in church but other than that kinda pointless.
I remember in an old PC Magazine or Boot (Maximum PC), they figured out that sticking and index card into the crack between the drive and the case would quiet down their CD-ROM drive.... that was a few years ago, with a different CD-ROM drive though...
it's just like with case fans.... you can't make things any quieter if the revolutions per minute get really high. Some drives are quieter than others but no 52x drive will be very quiet
