How do I get my 4:3 CRT to display a widescreen resolution?

Is this even possible? I'd like to run 1280x720 on my 19" 4:3 CRT. How do I do this without the picture being stretched? For example, when I watch HD 720p movies on my 4:3 HDTV I get black bars on the top and bottom. How can I get my PC monitor to do this?

Thanks,

I think you need to think a bit about what you're asking....

It's kind of like saying, how do I fit my 30' boat in my 20' garage?

You don't seem to understand... The way you're viewing it now IS the correct way. You are in fact seeing 1280x720 pixels of movie resolution. The reason you see those black bars is because your monitor is not a widescreen monitor. If you set it to a widescreen resolution, that would cause everything to be really squished and tall and skinny. Then your movie would take up the whole screen, but it would be distorted.

I think he's asking how he can use a widescreen desktop resolution without it being stretched vertically to fit the entire monitor. So he WANTS black bars on his desktop (NOT just movie, but the entire windows interface) so that it displays the resolution properly.

Check "keep aspect ratio" or something to that effect in the software player you are using.
